What this document is
Wãra reads official public statistics against five fixed questions about people's lives, and asks them of a place rather than a country, because a national average describes nowhere in particular. Everything below comes from published official tables, named beside each figure. It describes what the sources show; it does not explain why, and it does not evaluate anything anyone has done about it.

Deaths where alcohol was the underlying cause

For every 100,000 people living here, this many died in a year from an illness caused by alcohol, or from alcohol poisoning. Deaths where alcohol contributed but another cause was recorded are not counted.

What this does not cover: Four more parts of this question, food, access to health care, care in the home and community life, are not opened yet. Within essential services, 3 of the six requirements have no regional source at all: household energy, waste, and digital connectivity.

Statistics Finland's 2024 population projection, which assumes recent birth, death and migration rates continue. How it was obtained: Regional values summed from the 309 municipalities the projection is published for; the source does not publish it at region level. Counts only. The change shown is 2045 minus 2025; the source publishes population levels, not the difference, and both years are projected values from the 2024 vintage rather than observed populations. Limitation: A projection is conditional. It describes what would happen if recent birth, death and migration rates continued, and those rates can change.

Method and sources
Wãra reads official public statistics against a fixed set of questions about a territory, and reports what the sources answer and what they do not. Most figures here are reproduced exactly as the table named beside them publishes them. A few are obtained by arithmetic on published figures, such as summing the municipalities a source publishes or taking the difference between two years of one series, and each of those is marked as derived with the arithmetic stated. Wãra models nothing of its own and interpolates nothing to fill a gap: where a source publishes no value, the gap is shown as a gap. Where a figure did not survive checking, it is withheld and said to be withheld.
How far these figures have been checked
Every figure here is Sourced: traceable to a named official table, acquired directly from the publisher. That is not the same as Governed, which additionally requires candidate inspection, human review and a QA pass. No figure in this report is presented as a governed, released Wãra output, and none should be quoted as one. A Wãra proposal informs a human decision; it never replaces it.
Reading the figures
- Finland’s national figure counts people, not regions. The most populated regions weigh most, so a region can sit below the national figure and still be among the highest of the 19. National and regional figures are not two versions of the same average.
- A standing such as “4 of 19” orders the regions on that measure alone. It says where a region sits, not whether the distance between positions is large or meaningful.
- A region appearing at the unfavourable end of more than one measure is a coincidence of position worth noticing. It is not evidence that one of those measures causes another, and this report makes no causal claim.
- Measures are published for different years and by different bodies. The year beside each figure is the year that figure refers to, not the date of this document.
- A projection is a statement about the future under assumptions that may not hold. The 2025 to 2045 change is the difference between two years of Statistics Finland’s 2024 projection: both ends are projected populations rather than counted ones, and the difference itself is not a figure the source publishes.
Withheld from this document
One measure we acquired is not shown here: residents living inside a water or wastewater service area without being connected to it. The source records that figure separately for each network, and our acquisition adds those together, so the same resident can be counted more than once. It is withheld until the aggregation is corrected, rather than shown with a caveat.
